Vietnam joins the WIPO Copyright Treaty

The President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam has issued Decision No. 1871/2021/QD-CTN dated October 27, 2021 on accession to the Copyright Treaty of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO Copyright Treaty).

On November 17, 2021, Ms. Le Thi Tuyet Mai, Ambassador, Head of the Delegation of the Permanent Representative of Vietnam in Geneva had a meeting with WIPO Director General, Mr. Daren Tang to submit Vietnam’s document to join the WIPO Copyright Treaty.

The WIPO Copyright Treaty is a special agreement under the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, which deals with the protection of works and copyright in the digital environment. The WIPO Copyright Treaty was signed in Geneva on December 20, 1996, and extended the ratification and accession to member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The treaty entered into force after being ratified by 30 countries on March 6, 2002, and now has 111 member states.

Participating in the WCT Treaty will create an important economic impetus for individuals and organizations to create creative activities in the digital environment, as well as provide a significant legal basis for the development of cultural industries. based on national copyright, attracting investment and protecting innovation in the country.

According to the announcement of WIPO, the provisions of the Treaty will officially take effect for Vietnam from February 17, 2022.
