On April 1, 2022, at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Ambassador and Head of the Vietnamese Delegation to Geneva Le Thi Tuyet Mai presented Vietnam’s Instrument of Accession to the WPPT Treaty to Mr. WIPO Director General Daren Tang for deposit.

The WPPT Treaty is an agreement based on the Rome Convention for the Protection of Performers, Producers of Phonograms and Broadcasting Organisations, which deals with the protection of performances and phonograms in the digital medium. The WPPT Treaty was signed in Geneva on December 20, 1996, extending its ratification and accession to member states of WIPO. The treaty entered into force after it was ratified by 30 countries on May 20, 2002, and now has 111 member states.

Participation in the WPPT Treaty will encourage the development of creative activities and exploitation of the use of performances and phonograms and will contribute to strengthening the management and enforcement of protection of performances, phonograms, creating, storing, disseminating and using on the Internet environment.

According to the announcement of WIPO, the provisions of the Treaty will officially take effect for Vietnam from July 1, 2022.
